This Day That Age
President Eisenhower on July 14 called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on July 15 to consider the Middle East situation. The announcement followed a two-hour conference between the President and his chief military and diplomatic advisers and Congressional leaders on the coup in Iraq and the Lebanese conflict. Democratic Senator Mike Mansfield, who attended the conference, told reporters he understood that the Security Council would be asked to send an emergency force to the Lebanon to stabilise conditions there. He described the decision to call for a Security Council meeting as an alternative to direct military intervention by the U.S. in the Lebanon.
