This Day That Age
The Royal Palace announced in Amman (Jordan) on July 14 that King Hussein of Jordan will exercise power as head of the Arab Union of Iraq and Jordan from to-day. The move was taken by the Hashemite Royal Cabinet “owing to the absence” of King Faisal of Iraq, who was named head of the Arab Union of the two countries when it was formed. King Hussein has taken up duties as head of the Arab Union and as Commander-in-Chief of the Arab Army, the announcement said. At the same time, it was officially announced that Gen. Habes Majali, Commander of the Western part of the Arab Union forces, had been appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Arab Army. King Hussein, the 22-year-old monarch, to-day addressed his people over Jordan Radio and expressed regrets at the reports of “mutiny” which had taken place in Baghdad.
