Bail for eight cancelled in former MLA’s murder case

Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: First Additional Fast Track Court Judge Mahadeva Gowda here on Tuesday cancelled bail of eight accused in the murder of the former MLA Mylahalli Nanje Gowda and they were remanded in judicial custody.

Eleven of the accused were acquitted while two accused Puttaswamy and Manjunatha died during the trial.

The judge while cancelling the bail of the accused said they were found guilty of committing murder under section 302 IPC and that he had reserved judgment for the day and that the judgment would be pronounced on Wednesday.

The judge was to pronounce the judgment on Tuesday but the advocate representing the accused was not present in the court. Hence the case was posted to Wednesday for judgment.

On April 29, 1994, villagers of Mylahalli in Dudda hobli in Hassan taluk entered the house of the former MLA, ransacked it and allegedly murdered him.

Superintendent of Police K.V. Sharatchandra said that on that day, the assailants snatched the gun from Nanje Gowda and shot him.

Dudda police, who investigated the case, arrested 21 persons and filed a charge-sheet in the district court in Hassan.

Subsequently, all the accused were released on bail.

During the trial, Putta Swamy and Manjunath died. The eight accused — Chandre Gowda, Rame Gowda, Nanjunde Gowda, Javare Gowda, Basave Gowda, Gopala, Guruswamy and Lakshme Gowda — all from Mylahalli were found guilty by the judge and their bail was cancelled.

They were sent to District Jail in Hassan on Tuesday.

Ramesh, son of Nanje Gowda, told The Hindu that he got justice after 14 years.

Nanje Gowda represented Gandsi Assembly Constituency from 1972 to 1978.

He was a Congress MLA.
