Four RTPS units running

Raichur: There is no improvement in power generation from the Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) even as its second unit, which was shut down on June 29 following a leak in a steam tube of its boiler section, resumed generation on Monday.

The generation at the thermal plant remained at 20 million units (mu) a day following the shut down of its third unit on Sunday because of a technical snag.

Except the third and sixth units, the other five units are in functioning. The Sixth unit, which was closed on June 16, is under annual maintenance and it will be operational only after 50 days of overhauling. The third unit too is under maintenance.

B.R. Nagaraj, executive director (Thermal) of the RTPS, told The Hindu on Tuesday that of the installed capacity of1,470 MW at the thermal plant, they were able to generate about 950 MW a day generating about 20 mu.

He said that except the fifth unit, the annual maintenance of all other six units at the thermal plant was due and they planned to take up annual maintenance of these units during monsoon in phases. But a drastic reduction in storage at the hydel sources and the continued dry spell has increased the power demand in the State. However, it has been planned to keep at least four units running at a time, he said.
