State stance on High Court Bench

Special Correspondent

‘It is up to the Union government’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Law Minister M. Vijayakumar has said that it is for the President and Union government to take further decisions on setting up a Bench of the Kerala High Court in Thiruvananthapuram.

Replying to a submission by V. Surendran Pillai (KC-J) in the Assembly on Tuesday, the Minister said the State Cabinet had reviewed the progress of the measures for setting up the Bench on June 25.

He added that the government had requested the Union Cabinet to expedite a decision in the matter.

Mr. Vijayakumar pointed out that the State Cabinet had taken decisions on the Bench three times after the present government assumed office and regretted propaganda unleashed by certain sections that the State government had done nothing in the matter.

Irrigation projects

Replying to separate submissions by K.K. Shylaja Teacher and M. Hamza (both CPI-M), Water Resources Minister N. K. Premachandran said the government was trying to get the Pazhassi and Kanjirappuzha irrigation schemes as Extension Renovation and Modernisation (ERM) projects, each costing Rs.30 crore.
