Bellary, Raichur getting ready for State Olympics

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: The Department of Youth Services and Sports, in association with the Karnataka Olympic Association, will organise State Olympic games in Bellary and Raichur in November, according to Goolihatti Shekar, Minister for Youth Services and Sports.

Mr. Shekar, who was here to inspect the facilities and infrastructure available to organise the Olympic games, told presspersons on Tuesday that 24 events would be held 12 each in Raichur and Bellary – for a period of five days.

The existing facilities available in Bellary were suitable to organise the sports events, in which over 2,000 sportspersons would be taking part, the Minister said.

Football, badminton, swimming, basketball, fencing, hockey and table tennis, were among the 12 events to be held in Bellary while athletics, archery, kho-kho, boxing, cycling, and judo were among the 12 events to be organised in Raichur, he said.

The idea to organise the State Olympics in these two districts was to encourage sports in the backward regions.

Govindrajulu, Karnataka Olympic Association president, said the State Government had allocated Rs. 1.67 crore for organising the events and entry was free to the public and sports lovers.

Police Gymkhana, BDAA grounds, Muncipal School grounds, Medical College grounds, district stadium and other school grounds were selected to organise the events, he said.

Mr. Govindarajulu said he had requested the Government to make the State Olympic games an annual feature.

G. Janardhan Reddy, Minister for Tourism and Infrastructure Development, promised to extend full support for organising the event.

G. Somashekar Reddy, Bellary (city) MLA; Amarkumar Pandey, Commissioner, Department of Youth Services and Sports; and C.S. Bettasurmath, in-charge Deputy Commissioner; were present.
