Buddhadeb, Nirupam Sen call on Basu

KOLKATA: Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and State’s Industries Minister Nirupam Sen called on the veteran Marxist leader, Jyoti Basu here on Tuesday.

The two leaders, both of them members of the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), were understood to have discussed the latest developments in national politics ahead of the trust vote in the Lok Sabha on July 22.

The meeting was held even as questions continue to be raised in the political circles over the future of Somnath Chatterjee as Speaker of the Lok Sabha, though Prakash Karat, general secretary of the CPI (M), has made it clear that any decision on the issue will be taken by the Speaker himself.

Mr. Bhattacharjee had also visited Mr. Basu on Sunday. External Affairs Minister, Pranab Mukherjee and Mr Chatterjee had called on him earlier that day.

Mr. Chatterjee will abide with what the party leadership has to say on the matter, a member of the CPI (M) central committee, Benoy Konar, said.

Committee meet

The central committee is to meet in New Delhi on July 19 and 20, where discussions on matters related to national political developments as well as the India-U.S. nuclear deal are expected to be held.

The committee has also written to the CPI (M) State Secretariat for its view on a remark by senior leader Subhas Chakraborty expressing his unhappiness over the CPI(M) MPs voting alongside the Bharatiya Janata Party in the trust vote.

Mr. Chakraborty is a member of the CPI (M) State Secretariat as well as the State’s Transport Minister.

Trinamool stand

Meanwhile Trinamool Congress chief, Mamata Banerjee, said that the Parliamentary convention demands that Mr. Chatterjee quits as Speaker as he belongs to the CPI (M) which had withdrawn support to the government at the Centre.

“I do not have any personal enmity against him but propriety and Parliamentary convention demand that he resign,” she said.
