Harassment charge against IAS officer

Staff Reporter

CHANDIGARH: A criminal case has been registered against Ravneet Singh, a 2005 batch IAS officer of Karnataka cadre, his parents and younger brother for allegedly demanding a Mercedes car as dowry and showing cruelty to his wife.

Showing a copy of the FIR registered at the city police station in Muktsar, Pritpal Singh Dhaliwal, a medical officer in Muktsar, alleged that his daughter’s marriage was not consummated because the demand for the car as dowry could not be met.

“I spent more than Rs. 50 lakh on her wedding and even paid about Rs. 8 lakh in two instalments to them when they first threatened my daughter with the break-up,” he said.

Preet Inder Kaur, a rural health officer, said in her complaint that she was married to Mr. Ravneet Singh.

She had given a dowry of jewellery and diamonds worth Rs. 15 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh in cash at the time of marriage. Still she was harassed since the first day of her marriage.

The police booked Mr. Ravneet Singh, his father Pritpal Singh, mother Jaswant Kaur and younger brother Ravpreet Singh on July 5.

Mr. Pritpal Singh, speaking to The Hindu over phone from Hoshiarpur said, “On the day of the wedding we came to know about the mental disorder of the girl. She was taken to the DMC, Ludhiana, for a check-up and doctors confirmed the ailment.”

He rubbished the charges, saying they were a bundle of lies.
