Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Ramayana month starts on Wednesday. But, are there homes that continue the tradition of reading the great epic? While the practice has waned somewhat, reading the Ramayana is being brought back to the households with many groups organising reading sessions in various homes during the month of Karkitakam.

Temples organise programmes for the month and some educational institutions organise a week-long programme on the epic too. The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has organised a lecture by Prof. Thuravoor Vishwambharan on Raman — Dharmanusthanathinte Prayoga Mathruka (Ram — the practical model of following one’s duty) on Wednesday at the Bhavan’s Sardar Patel Sabhagriha, T.D. Road at 6 p.m.

The Bhavan’s Vidyamandir at Girinagar will be organising week-long celebrations with reading sessions, devotional song competitions and poster competition.

The Karkitakam month also marks the health conscious people taking herbal medicated concoction called Karkitaka kanji (broth). With much publicity about the good effects of the herbs, these are available is easy-to-make kits for people busy in their daily routine.

The ayurveda clinics too have a busy time providing treatment packages for the month.
