TIRUVARUR: Swimming freaks of Tiruvarur can soon have a splash at the pool – construction of a swimming pool at the District Stadium here is nearing completion.

The pool is being constructed at a cost of Rs.70 lakh. The State government has sanctioned Rs.33 lakh and the remaining amount was raised through public contributions.

The six-lane swimming pool is 25 metres in length and 13 metres in width. The depth of the shallow end is 3.5 feet, while that of the deep end is 5.5 feet. The pool, for which the construction works began in March this year, is almost ready, with only the tiles remaining to be laid.

Allied works such as construction of administrative building, water recycling plant, and other infrastructure facilities for swimmers, including showers, change rooms were underway at a brisk pace.

To be ready in three months

The Regional Senior Manager, Tiruchi-unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, N. Sundaram, who inspected the construction works on Sunday, said that the facility would be ready in three months time.

“The pool should benefit the locals immensely. For, they get a chance to swim regularly at nominal charges,” Mr. Sundaram added.

According to the District Sports Officer P. Gandhi, swimming being more of a complete exercise would help sportspersons stay fit.

The officials also said that a coach would be appointed once the pool is ready, which would help the people to learn swimming in a professional manner.
