Bogus birth certificate racket detected

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The City Corporation has sounded a warning to citizens against a racket in bogus birth certificates. Corporation officials recently detected the racket after several certificates forwarded from Passport Offices for verification proved to be bogus.

Health Inspector Jayadevan who holds charge of the Birth and Death section in the Corporation office said at least 10 certificates received from Passport Offices over the last six months were fake. “On being summoned, the certificate holders admitted that they had been duped by agents near the Passport Office. However, none could identify the agents. We have submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police requesting an inquiry.”

Mr. Jayadevan said most of the applicants approached agents to avoid complications arising out of the inconsistency in the date of birth shown in original document and school leaving certificate.

A pressnote quoting Mayor C. Jayan Babu on Tuesday directed the public to refrain from depending on agents to provide birth certificates.

The pressnote said only the City Corporation was empowered to issue birth certificate.

The Janasevana Kendram at the Corporation office was open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Applicants could also receive the certificate by post.
