Port, dock workers call off strike

Port and dock workers have called off all India strike slated to begin on Monday following an accord between the Indian Ports Association and the representatives of the five recognised federations of port and dockworkers.

The settlement was arrived at before the Chief Labour Commissioner at New Delhi.

The demands conceded included merger of 50 per cent dearness allowance with the basic with effect from January 1, 2007 and one-time lumpsum adjustable advance calculated at 13.5 per cent of the basic pay as on January 1, 2007 for 18 months.

Meanwhile, port trustees D.K. Sarma, V.V. Rama Rao and BMS leader Bhavani Shankardu expressed satisfaction over the outcome of talks.
