FM radio stations sought to be involved in guiding parents Special teachers should have patience, love, says expert Manipal: Honorary director of Manipal Institute of Communication M.V. Kamath said on Tuesday that associations for special teachers should formulate programmes to sensitise the officials and leaders at Government-level on the problems facing special children and persons. He was speaking at the State-level conference of special teachers and non-teaching staff of institutions for mentally challenged people, organised by the Archana Trust and Atithi Pratishthana, here. Mr. Kamath said that the associations should produce documentaries and bring out articles on the problems faced by the mentally challenged children and people. There were 120 FM radio stations in the country which could be used to give guidance to parents of special children. A national-level organisation should be set up to take care of mentally challenged children after the death of their parents, he said. However, these associations could begin by collecting the data about special children in the States. This process might take a year. Then, they could focus on formulation of programmes to help special children and people, which could be handed over to the Union Government, Mr. Kamath said. Although State governments could also take action, intervention by the Union Government was necessary while dealing with this issue. Parents should be affectionate towards special children, he said. H.J. Gowri, physician, said that training should be given to special children so that they could lead an independent life, as far as possible. “Special teachers should have patience, strength and love to give training to these children,” she added.
