Alleged auto-lifting gang busted

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Three alleged auto-lifters have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. The police claim to have recovered 17 stolen motorcycles and a Maruti-800 car from them.

Acting on a tip-off that an auto-lifting gang led by Ashfaq was active in and around the Capital, the police mounted surveillance and learnt that a member of the gang, Ramesh, would come to Okhla to dispose of a stolen motorcycle on July 7. A trap was laid and the accused was arrested.

30 vehicles stolen

During interrogation, Ramesh purportedly disclosed that he and his accomplices had stolen over 30 vehicles in Delhi and neighbouring Noida. The motorcycle seized from him was found to have been stolen from Sarita Vihar about two months ago. At his instance, the police arrested Ashfaq on July 8. Ashfaq allegedly disclosed that he and his accomplices were involved in more than 50 cases of auto-lifting. Another member of the gang, Vakir, was arrested in New Ashok Nagar on Monday. The police seized 12 forged registration certificates purportedly issued by transport authorities in Kanpur and Farukhabad in Uttar Pradesh and two fake stamps from the accused.

According to the police, Ashfaq learnt to forge documents from a tout at the Farukhabad transport authority. He would allegedly dispose of motorcycles on the basis of fake registration certificates.
