Muslim Women Aid Society formed in Karur

To support women in distress and destitute widows

The new society has plans to open home for aged women
First health camp to be held on August 9 at Pallappatti

KARUR: The Muslim Women Aid Society, aimed at reaching out to the women in distress and also destitute widows among the minority community, has been formed in Karur district. An initiative of the State Government, the society is expected to cater to the needs of the destitute women in the district.

Promoted under the aegis of the Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department, the society aimed at ameliorating the sufferings of the widows and destitute women by instilling confidence and preparing them to face the challenges ahead with a strong will, the Collector and president of the Administrative Committee of the society, T.N. Venkatesh, said here on Monday after chairing the first meeting of the committee.

It would strive to impart soft skills and training in manufacturing handicrafts, khadi products and products under the small scale and cottage industry fold to the beneficiaries.

Formation of self-help groups, extending credit for economic development activities to achieve all round development of the beneficiary individual was among the concerns of the society, the Collector said.

The new body would also try to prepare the beneficiaries to obtain soft loans through the Tamil Nadu Minorities Corporation (TAMCO), help women get micro credit for carrying on small business and for providing assistance to economic uplift and educational assistance.

Web site to be hosted

The State Government has allowed a seed money of Rs.1 lakh for the society which has been allowed to launch a web site of its own and solicit donations and contributions from any domestic or even overseas individual or agency for contributions. It could raise funds from industrialists, traders, philanthropists and volunteers. Significantly the Government would sanction an amount annually equivalent to the amount raised as matching grant to help society serve the beneficiaries.

The society would open a home for training destitute Muslim women in handicrafts, small scale industries, etc. as also a home for aged women, besides conducting healthcare programmes. The first health camp would be conducted on August 9 at Pallappatti.

Vice-president of the Society and Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, Ayyaru, District Backward Classses Welfare Officer Gopalakrishnan, honorary secretary Munavar Jan, honorary joint secretaries Shahul Hameed and Fathima Tasleem, Kulithalai taluk Keezhpaguthi panchayat president Safira Begum were among those who participated in the meeting.
