Experts train ‘special’ teachers

HYDERABAD: Curricula sample modules in five subjects were prepared for teaching mentally challenged children at the primary school level were prepared during the three-day national seminar on ‘Inclusive Education’ which concluded here on Saturday.

Special education experts from different parts of the country as well as officials from departments like NCERT, NIMH, SSA and others participated in the meet organised by ‘Swayamkrushi’, a NGO, with the support of Union Ministry for Human Resource Development. Guidelines for special education teachers were made for English, Hindi, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Theme Teaching. “We have made a good beginning on preparing the modules and it will be taken up in a larger scale for proper testing at the school level before it is made part of the course curricula as per the CBSE pattern,” said former Deputy Director, National Institute of Mentally Handicapped, Jayanthi Narayan. ‘Swayamkrushi’ Secretary Manjula Kalyan pointed out that inclusive education for mentally challenged children was a challenge.

Content development

The meet during its brainstorming focused on content development.Chairperson of the National Trust for the Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities, Poonam Natarajan, pointed out that special schools do not prepare such children for an adult life.
