Congress leaders, workers to tour State

CHENNAI: Congress leaders in Tamil Nadu, along with party workers, will tour every nook and corner of the State to propagate various welfare measures being implemented by the party-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thankgabalu said here on Tuesday.

Participating in the 106th birth anniversary celebrations of Kamaraj organised by the State unit of the party, he said party leaders and workers would not hesitate to take to the streets to fight for the rights of common people.

He recalled that it was Kamaraj who brought identity and recognition to Tamilians. Though the Congress was not in power for the last 40 years in the State, the spirit of party workers had not waned.

He denied any factionalism in the State unit of the party.

Expressing confidence that the United Progressive Government will win the vote of confidence on July 22,

Mr. Thankgabalu said crisis was not new to the party, as it had successfully overcome many such situations in the past.

Union Minister of State for Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan appealed to the workers to spread awareness among people of the various welfare measures implemented by the Centre.

For Tamil Nadu alone, the Centre had allotted several thousand crores for various programmes. Kamaraj’s birthday celebrations would be the foundation for unity of the party in the State.

Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan appealed to Communist parties to support the UPA in the interest of the nation.

He and party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan explained the salient features of the Indo-U.S. deal and the need for ensuring energy security of the country.

Congress legislature party leader D. Sudarssanam and deputy leader D. Yesoda said it was the Congress that had made many sacrifices for the country.

AICC member Karti Chidambaram read out a message sent by Union Minister P. Chidambaram.

A special exhibition of rare collection of photos of Kamaraj, from his younger days to his last journey, was organised by Congress Natpagam.

The TNCC president inaugurated the photo exhibition.
