“UPA will survive vote of confidence”

MADURAI: The United Progressive Alliance government will survive the July 22 vote of trust in Parliament and emerge victorious in the next general elections, Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan said on Tuesday.

Addressing a meeting organised on the occasion of the 106th birth anniversary of Kamaraj, he said: “The UPA, under the guidance of (Congress president) Sonia Gandhi, will overcome all hurdles.” The UPA was providing good governance and making efforts, including pursuing the nuclear deal, to make India a super power. But, the “communal” Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies and the Communist parties were creating problems. Exuding confidence that the government would complete its term, he said: “We will win both in Parliament and in the people’s court,” referring to the next general elections.

Following the principles of Kamaraj, the UPA government was implementing the free noon meal scheme across the country. It had allocated Rs.8,000 crore to feed 13.9 lakh school children, Mr. Vasan said. Though the Congress was not in power in Tamil Nadu, it was still a force to reckon with.
