BANGALORE: The Karnataka committees of the three Left parties — the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India and the All-India Forward Bloc — will launch a Statewide campaign against the proposed nuclear deal with the United States. According to leaders of the Joint State Committee of the three parties, the United Progressive Alliance government has committed itself to the U.S. on the nuclear deal knowing well that the deal would impinge on India’s sovereignty. The U.S. was trying to enslave India for its future energy needs, they told presspersons here on Tuesday. Secretary of the CPI(M) State unit V.J.K. Nair said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had assured Parliament in August 2006 that the country’s interest and its energy security would be protected, but his assurances had been nullified by the Hyde Act passed by the U.S. Congress in December 2006. He said India had ample opportunity to pull out of the deal on the strength of the Hyde Act, saying that the Act infringed on India’s security concerns.
