Chennai: Second seed and holder of International Master norms, Arun Karthik of SRM University had to defend long before winning his opening round game in the FIDE-rated SRM Tamil Nadu Junior Chess Championship which started at the S.R.M. University in Kattankulathur near here. “I had to defend long before winning in 42 moves,” said Arun about his win over K. Hariraj. Top seed Shyam Nikhil of Nagercoil who joined the SRM School in eleventh standard won with ease with white pieces. Opening round saw no upsets. Down on the ninth table, higher rated Anandh Raj was held to a draw by fellow Chennai player Ashwin Balaji. Every single result in the girls section was won by the higher rated player. Top-seeded S. Harini representing the host won with ease on the top table with white pieces against Karthikeyini of Madurai. Ten rounds remain to be played in the tournament. The top four will represent the state in the Nationals. For the first time in India, a junior State championship is FIDE-rated. The event was inaugurated by Prof P. Sathyanarayanan, Vice-Chancellor of SRM University. The results (first round): Boys: Shyam Nikhil (SRM) bt Pratheep Ganesh (Dgl); K. Hariraj (Vir) lost to Arun Karthik (SRM); T.U. Navin Kanna (Tvlr) bt Kamal Shankar (Tri); Cibe Hariharan (Vir) lost to R. Premnath (SRM); V.A.V. Rajesh (Che) bt M. Sabhareesh (Che); M. Aadithitya (Kan) lost to N. Surendran (Tvlr); T.R. Shanmughanathan (SRM) bt B. Abhishek (Kan); Adhith Nagaraj (Cud) lost to K.V. Venprakash (SRM); M.M. Anandh Raj (Che) drew with Ashwin Balaji (Che). Girls: S. Harini (SRM) bt R. Karthikeyini (Mdu); J.G. Nivedhitha (Bloom) lost to N. Raghavi (Che); P.K. Jayashree (Elite) bt Michelle Catherina (Che); V. Janu (Tvlr) lost to J. Saranya (Tvlr); C.H. Savetha (Che) bt B. Arthi (Tvlr); M. Abinaya (Tvlr) lost to A. Sithalatchumi (Mdu).
