Fresh survey to assess beneficiaries of schemes NGOs involved in rehabilitation programme told not to misuse funds PUDUCHERRY: Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy on Wednesday said his department would soon form a society for persons with disabilities. Speaking at a function held to felicitate children with multiple disabilities who had participated in a regional sports meet, he said steps had been taken to form the society for carrying out welfare measures for them. Mr. Kandasamy said the Social Welfare Department had decided to carry out a fresh survey to assess the real beneficiaries of the schemes targeted at the physically challenged persons. Around 20,000 people claim for various benefits. He also appealed to the legislators to cooperate with the officials to gather accurate data. He urged non-governmental organisations involved in the rehabilitation programme, especially for children with disabilities, to be “honest” in utilising funds. The government is keen to ensure that funds allocated for persons with disabilities are not “misused,” he said. The Minister distributed prizes to children with disabilities of Satya Special School in Pondicherry. As many as 22 children of the school won several prizes in the Regional Sports Meet for children with multiple disabilities held at Chennai recently. Director of Social Welfare Department P. Priytarshny said the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities had shown interest in establishing a satellite unit of the Institute in Puducherry to train personnel for providing counselling to children with disabilities. Presently, the Union Territory did not have trained manpower to provide psychological counselling to the children with disabilities, she said. Others who spoke at the function included local MLA R. Siva and Patron of Satya Special School Nallam.
