MALAPPURAM: Amarambalam panchayat in the district, where a large number of children have been found to be mentally-challenged, will soon have a special school to take care of the 70-odd victims. The initiative is being taken up by a group of doctors under the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The school will open on Thursday. The special school, set up by the Homme Charitable Trust in 50 cents of land at the Fifth Mile, near Pookkottumpadam, Nilambur, will function in association with the Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (IMHANS), Kozhikode, said K.T. Manoj Kumar, president of the Homme Charitable Trust. He said 70 mentally-challenged children of Amarambalam panchayat were grouped in three categories. Fifteen children below 15 years of age with mild mental symptoms will get educational training. Twenty-five children above 15 years of age have been identified as having mild mental retardation. These children will get vocational training, said Dr. Manoj. Home care will be given to all children with severe and profound symptoms and cerebral palsy irrespective of their age, said Dr. Manoj. The Homme School will work in association with the Pain and Palliative Society. The vehicle and the nursing staff of the Pain and Palliative Society will be made use to ensure home care for those with severe problems, he said.
