Udhagamandalam: To draw the attention of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) to their demands, members of the Nilgiris District TASMAC Employees Association, affiliated to CITU, resorted to a novel form of protest here on Wednesday.

They removed their shirts and staged a demonstration at the Independence Square. It was led by the State vice-president, TASMAC Sammelan, J. Haldorai.

Among those who addressed the demonstrators were the Nilgiris CPI(M) secretary L. Thiagarajan and G. Suresh of CITU. Regretting that despite various forms of protest over the years, the government was turning a blind eye to the grievances of the TASMAC employees, especially in the Nilgiris district, Mr. Haldorai told The Hindu that their main demand was that their service should be regularised and salaries fixed on time-scale basis. Pointing out that recoveries were adding to the woes of the employees, he said that they should be returned forthwith.
