Chicken smuggled through a pocket road 16 arrested in connection with the incident KALPETTA: Suresh Thaloor, president of the Nenmani panchayat, and a group of CPI(M) activists were attacked when they were reportedly trying to prevent smuggling of chicken from Tamil Nadu to Kerala, through a pocket road without paying sales tax. The group was attacked at Pambla, near the Kerala –Tamil Nadu border, on Wednesday morning. This is the fourth incident in two months of villagers thwarting attempts to smuggle chicken. When the villagers reached the Ambalavayal police station to register a complaint, the members of the smuggling gang attacked them on the police station premises and again at the Ambalavayal Primary Health Centre, Mr. Suresh alleged. M.M. George, standing committee chairman, Nenmani panchayat, and the CPI(M) activists Mavadi Bhaskaran, K. Baheer and N. Sreedharan were admitted to the Taluk Hospital, Sulthan Bathery. The police have arrested 16 men in connection with this incident and set up a police picket at Pambla, K. Madhusoodanan, DSP, Mananthavadi, said.
