‘Anti-people’ policies of governments draw flak

Staff Correspondent

Conference of trade unions on July 20

Centre condemned for failure to check inflation

Streamline PDS, says committee

DAVANGERE: The Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions has opposed the “anti-people and anti-labour” policies of the State and the Union governments. The committee has also condemned the Union Government for failing to check inflation.

Talking to presspersons here on Wednesday, Hanumanthappa and K.L. Bhat, spokesmen of the committee, charged that globalisation and privatisation had pushed up prices of essential commodities.

The UPA Government did not stick to the Common Minimum Programme and as a result the agricultural sector had lagged behind other sectors and farmers were in distress, they said.

The committee decided to organise a conference of trade unions here on July 20. A protest rally against the Union Government will also be organised.

“The Government was planning to reduce the posts in the departments by outsourcing work and it had failed to initiate any action to rejuvenate the sick industries in the State,” they said.

Mr. Bhat asked why the Union Government was reluctant to offer loan waiver to all farmers, who had sustained huge losses in the past several years. He said that 80 per cent subsidy on fertilizers and seeds was being provided in developed countries, and questioned why India could not the same.

The committee demanded the Union Government contain the prices of essential commodities, streamline the public distribution system and reduce tax on petrol and diesel.

Action sought

The committee sought stringent action against hoarders, implementation of the welfare measures for labourers in the unorganised sector and withdrawal of restrictions over the recruitment of government employees.
