CUTTACK: Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Orissa High Court on Wednesday. Acting Governor of the State Syed Sibtey Razi administered the oath of office to the new Chief Justice at a brief ceremony here on the High Court premises. Razi, also the Governor of Jharkhand, had the rare opportunity to administer the oath of office to two new chief justices within a week. On Sunday, he administered the oath to Chief Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra of Jahrkhand HC at Raj Bhawan in Ranchi. Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Law Minister B.B. Harichandan, all judges of the HC, Chief Secretary Ajit Tripathy, DGP Gopal Nanda and members of the bar including Advocate General B.K. Mahanty were present at the swearing-in ceremony here. Justice Chauhan is the 22nd CJ of Orissa High Court, which was established here in 1948. Prior to his present assignment, Justice Chauhan was a judge of the Allahabad High Court. The Orissa CJ post was lying vacant since May this year following the transfer of former Chief Justice A.K. Ganguly to Madras High Court. With the appointment of Justice Chauhan, the strength of judges in Orissa High Court went up to 19, the highest-ever during the past six decades of its existence. Following the National Law Commission’s suggestion, the Orissa Government has given sanction for 22 judges in HC to tackle the mounting pending cases.
