For beedi workers Free master health check-up TIRUNELVELI: Minister of State for Home Affairs V. Radhika Selvi inaugurated a 30-bed Central Hospital for beedi workers, constructed by Ministry of Labour Welfare and Employment at Mukkoodal in the district on Wednesday. Constructed at a cost of Rs. 4.15 crore with the total plinth area of 4,764 square metre on 8.32 acre, it has casualty, gynaecology, laboratory, ward block, out-patient, central, laundry and administrative blocks. It will cater to the needs of 40,000 beedi workers in and around Mukkoodal and 4 lakh throughout the district and they can be referred to this hospital for investigations and treatment. Though this hospital was inaugurated four years ago, it was only dealing with the outpatients and the today’s formal inauguration will enable the Labour Welfare Organisation to admit the patients also in this full-fledged hospital. While Cheranmahadevi MLA, P. Veldurai, inaugurated the casualty block, Labour Welfare Commissioner, Hyderabad Region, G. Rama Rao, opened the administrative block. Mr. Rama Rao asked the workers, who owned 60 square metre plot could get the subsidy of Rs. 40,000 for constructing house and avail themselves of annual scholarships for their children from Rs. 250 to Rs. 8,000. Informing that Tamil Nadu was getting Rs. 18 crore a year from the Centre to look after beedi workers, Ms. Radhika Selvi said the beneficiaries could go for master health check-up in this hospital free of cost twice a year.
