NEW DELHI: A court here on Wednesday acquitted 107 people in a rioting case of 1995 after finding no substance in the allegations of the prosecution. The mob had allegedly resorted to violence following the death of an innocent man who was beaten up by a Delhi Police constable. Additional Sessions Judge Narinder Kumar acquitted the accused saying the prosecution had not been able to place anything substantial on record in support of the allegations. The prosecution had said a mob of more than 100 had resorted to rioting in protest against the death of a man, Dilip, at Ashok Vihar in North-West Delhi on January 30, 1995. Alleged violenceThey allegedly resorted to violence as they were angry over the death of Dilip after being thrashed by policeman. Following the incident, the police had arrested 135 people, most of whom belonged to a slum cluster in Wazirpur Industrial Area. While 23 of the accused were declared proclaimed offenders in the case as they had stopped attending the court proceedings, four died during the long drawn trial.
