NEW DELHI: Non-resident Indian Avtar Singh Grewal, facing prosecution for allegedly killing his estranged wife in the United States and fleeing the country, examined a doctor before a court here on Wednesday to support his claim that he is innocent. During his examination by Grewal before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A.K. Kuhar, Safdarjung Hospital’s Forensic Science and Toxicology head Alexander Khakha said a perusal of the post-mortem report indicated that the injuries on the person of Navneet Kaur, the victim, were ante-mortem (before death).
Grewal, who is trying to avoid extradition in the case, had claimed earlier that his wife was already dead when he went to meet her at Phoenix in the US. The Ministry of External Affairs has told the court that there was credible evidence to show that Grewal was involved in the killings. Appearing for the Ministry, Special Prosecutors A.K. Wali and Naveen Matta would cross-examine the doctor on July 30, the next date of hearing. According to the prosecution, Grewal, had gone to Phoenix to meet his estranged wife in March 2007. After allegedly killing her on March 29, he bought a one-way ticket to India. He was arrested two days later at Delhi airport.
