COIMBATORE: The State government has allotted Rs.12.79 crore for road safety measures such as erecting caution signs, lights at junctions of village roads and highways and speed humps. The allocation follows the recommendations of Transport Commissioner C.P. Singh. The accident-prone points were studied by experts and police officers, and the Collectors of 22 districts had identified 1,283 pockets that required remedial measures. The districts are Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Villuppuram, Cuddalore, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari, Tiruchirapalli, Karur, Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Erode, Namakkal and Krishnagiri. The government has allocated Rs 2.66 crore for installation of caution signs, Rs.8,52 crore for erecting lights at inter-junctions in more than 609 places. Similarly, Rs 1.59 crore had been allocated for installation of speed breakers at 799 places.
