CHANDIGARH: Union Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Minister T.R. Baalu on Wednesday inaugurated a 10-km-long toll flyover, including a 3.4-km elevated stretch, on National Highway No.1 in Panipat. This would prove a boon to travellers as they would not only avoid traffic jams and congestion in Panipat but also the travel time between Delhi and Chandigarh would be reduced by at least 40 minutes.Mr. Baalu said the UPA Government was committed to achieving a growth target of 8 to 10 per cent for the Indian economy over the next decade. “India has one of the largest road networks in the world and the Centre has given the highest priority to the development of National Highways and rural roads,” he added. He claimed that the UPA regime had completed 5,948 km of National Highways at the rate of 3.96 km per day during the past four years. The progress on this front during four years (December 2000 to May 2004) rule of NDA was only 2,342 km at the rate of 1.86 km per day, he added. Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that various projects of renovation of roads and bridges worth Rs.2,000 crore were being executed under the Rajiv Gandhi Bridge and Road Infrastructure Development Programme which was launched by Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on November 28, 2007. He disclosed that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) had also taken up construction of flyovers at Gannaur, Murthal and Samalkha on NH-1 and widening of the Panipat-Rohtak National Highway to six-lane. The NHAI had allotted the work of six-laning of NH-1 from Panipat to Ambala at a cost of Rs. 730 crore and construction of a six-lane elevated flyover on NH-2 at Badarpur at a cost of Rs.350 crore.
