Girl’s ‘key’ role in arrest of culprit

C. Jaishankar

Dhanalakshmi

RAMANATHAPURAM: She may be just 11 years old, but her presence of mind has not only prevented an attempt of chain snatching but also saved a woman from the clutch of a chain snatcher.

According to the police, Vasanthi (30), wife of Elangovan of Oththaveedu near Devipattinam, went to the Government Hospital at Pottahavayal to get treatment for a child of her sister. When she was returning along with Dhanalakshmi (11), daughter of Manoharan, to her village, a motor cyclist suddenly tried to waylay them.

He threatened Vasanthi with wooden log to give the jewels.

. However, after a struggle, she ran into a nearby jungle leaving the child in order to save her life and jewels. Dhanalakshmi who rushed to Oththaveedu to inform the villagers about the incident, brought villagers, who caught him.

But, he escaped from their clutch and tried to start his bike. However, a shrewd Dhanalakshmi, removed the key immediately forcing him to surrender to the villagers and subsequently he was handed over to the Devipattinam police.

He was identified as Kathiravan alias Kathirvel of Thuthivalasai.

The smartness of Dhanalakshmi earned appreciation from several quarters particularly from the police.

“It is surprise to see the girl’s spectacular presence of mind. She will have a bright future,” says K.A. Senthilvelan, Superintendent of Police, who brought her to his office to present a token of appreciation.

He also commended Vasanthi and Thangam for their role in catching the accused.
