Councillors protest revision of property tax in Dindigul
|
DINDIGUL: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) along with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Pattali Makkal Katchi walked out of a municipal council meeting here on Wednesday.
They protested revision of property tax. However, the DMK councillors expressed their consent and passed a resolution to revise property tax.
The Dindigul municipal council meeting was presided over by the Chairman R. Natarajan.
The Vice-Chairman V. Kalyanasundaram, CPI (M), condemned the revision of property tax, particularly for residential buildings. “It was unacceptable as it would further burden middle class people, who had already been struggling by hike in the prices of essential commodities.”
“The CPI (M) is against such revision and it wants to abandon the move.”
The AIADMK and the PMK councillors too protested the revision as it would adversely affect common man.
“It is an anti-people move. The DMK-led council took an anti-people policy. It should be withdrawn.”
The revision was made as per the guidelines of the municipal administration. It advised that the revision for residential building should not exceed 25 per cent, for industrial buildings not more than cent per cent and for commercial buildings not over 150 per cent, said Mr. Natarajan.
A special team had already divided the municipal area into four zones to fix the basic value. A sum of Rs.155 was fixed as basic value for buildings in A zone, Rs.125 for B zone, Rs.95 for C zone and Rs.65 for D zone.
“We need to revise the tax to implement underground drainage project and to pay salary to its employees as per the sixth pay commission recommendations. The revised pay scale to municipal employees alone would be around Rs.2.5 crore per annum,” he added.
