dated July 17, 1958: Defence of Lebanon

President Eisenhower announced on July 15 that more than 5,000 United States Marines were landing in Lebanon to protect American lives and to encourage the defence of Lebanon’s sovereignty and integrity. “These forces have not been sent as any act of war,” the President declared in a special White House statement. He added that these forces had been dispatched in response to an urgent plea received on July 14 from President Chamoun. The United States was reporting the measures taken to the United Nations Security Council and was making clear that the measures would be terminated as soon as the Security Council had itself taken action necessary to maintain international peace and security.
