dated July 17, 1958: Arab nationalism

Prime Minister Nehru, addressing a meeting in Allahabad on July 15, said that the military coup in Iraq was an indication of the growing Arab nationalism. He briefly referred to the developments in Iraq and said: “I do not think it proper to make any comments on the developments in Iraq. But one thing is quite clear that nationalism is growing in all the countries. Similarly Arab nationalism is also growing. But the difficulty is that the big countries do not realise it. We cannot give them any advice.” The Prime Minister observed that India was wedded to a policy of neutrality but that would not make her immune to the ravages of war wrought by atom and hydrogen bombs. India, he said, would not arrogate to herself the role of an adviser and guide to others and was committed to the ways of democracy and peaceful methods.
