Paralympic Nationals in August

BANGALORE: The Paralympic Committee of India in association with the Karnataka Sports Association for Physically Handicapped will conduct the 3rd sub-junior National Paralympic athletics championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium from August 10 to 13.

The four-day event has attracted over 1,500 athletes in two age categories — eight to 12 and 12 to 16.

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Ratan Singh, President, Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), said: “International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports (IWAS) has been allotted to India for November’ 2009 and will be held in Bangalore. Bangalore will also play host to the Pre-Commonwealth Games, also sometime next year.” Ten disciplines will be held in the IWAS World games.

Speaking at the conference State minister for Textiles, Youth Services and Sports, Mr. Goolihatti D. Shekar, said, “Rs. 15 lakh has been sanctioned for the sub-junior Nationals and all help and support will be provided for the disabled children to perform to their best.”

Shivraj stars for IBBC

Shivraj Kumar netted 24 points and helped IBBC defeat DRDO 54-37 in a State ‘B’ division basketball league match at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium courts here on Wednesday.

The results: IBBC 54 (Shivraj Kumar 24, Ravi Kumar 11) bt DRDO 37 (Thomas 10); SAI Dharwad 63 (Dheeraj Shetty 28, Shahbaz 14) bt Orients SC 46 (Arvind 10); Ambedkar SC 57 (A. Aneez 17, Karan Sood 13) bt NAL 52 (Nishanth 10); Bharath Sports Union 47 (Vishal 17, Samir 12) bt Ambedkar SC 41 (Karan Sood 14); Koramangala SC 61 (Abhishek 20, Sharath 14) bt SBI 41 (Latheef 13, Rajiv 12); Kanaka Kolar 63 (Ashok 16, Guruprasad 15) bt DRDO 49 (Abhishek 17).

Bishop Cotton ‘A’ wins

Bishop Cotton ‘A’ overpowered St. Philomena’s (Bellary) to lift the BTC Cup in the inter-school girls’ hockey tournament here on Wednesday. St. Philomena’s opened the scoring with Anusha Patil (3rd) sounding the boards. Bishop Cotton rallied quickly, and with S. Disha (6th), Denzin Butto( 12th), Vaishnavi (45th) and Mahira Alvaraes (48th)’s goals, gained control of the match. Vijaylakshmi Powar slotted St Philomenas’ second goal.

In the match for the third and fourth place, Sports School (Kudige) beat Bishop Cottons ‘B’ 6-0. Komala (9th and 28th), Bhavya (12th), Vidya (24th), Sandhya (27th) and Bhavani (39th) scored.

Mr Nirmal Prasad, Secretary, Bangalore Turf Club gave away the prizes.

Special prizes: Best Goalkeeper: Lucy Daisy (St. Philomena’s), Best Defender: Kavya (Sports School, Kudige), Best Halfline: Denzin Butto (Bishop Cotton), Best Forward: Vijaylakshmi Powar (St Philomenas), Player of the Tournament: N.S. Neha (Bishop Cotton), Fair Play Award: St. Francis Xavier, Upcoming team: Best High School.
