Chennai: Day two of the SRM Tamil Nadu FIDE Rated Junior Chess Championship did not go well for the top seeds of each of the sections. However, Shyam Nikhil, the boy’s top seed, and S. Harini, the girl’s top seed wriggled out from poor positions making fighting draws.

Both are tied for the fourth place in their respective sections with 2.5 points.

Eight rounds remain

After three rounds, three boys and three girls are leading with full three points at the SRM University at Kattankulathur near here. Eight rounds remain to be played.

T.U. Navin Kanna (Tvlr), C.S. Rajesh (Cbe) and S. Ganesh Babu (Mdu) are leading the boys group with three points. N. Raghavi (Che), J. Saranya (Tvlr) and C.H. Savetha (Che) are ahead in the girls section with maximum points from three rounds.

Harini held

Sithalatchumi of Madurai trapped the knight of favourite Harini and ceded two pawns for it. Harini fought hard to bridge the gap and make a draw. In the boys’ top board, Arun Karthik, a near International Master strength player took a surprising 11-move draw against his SRM team-mate Aravind Subramanian.

In the morning session, top seed Shyam Nikhil of Nagercoil representing sponsors, SRM University escaped with a draw against B. Sekar (Tvlr). In the girls section, M. Khushboo (Tvlr) outplayed higher rated P.K. Jayshree of Salem.

Important results (round three): Boys: Aravind Subramanian (SRM) 2.5 drew with Arun Karthik (SRM) 2.5, T.U. Navin Kanna (Tvlr) 3 bt Ramesh Shanmugasundaram (Cbe) 2.

J. Arun (Che) 2.5 drew with R. Premnath (SRM) 2.5, C.S. Rajesh (Cbe) 3 bt N. Surendran (Tvlr) 2.

G. Yogesh (Mdu) 2 lost to S. Ganesh Babu (Mdu) 3, P. Shyam Nikhil (SRM) 2.5 bt M. Karthikeyan (TNCA) 2.

Girls: S. Harini (SRM) 2.5 drew with A. Sithalatchumi (Mdu) 2.5.

R. Visalatchi (Vir) 2 lost to N. Raghavi (Che) 3, Priya Sandhya (Kan) 2 lost to J. Saranya (Tvlr) 3.

C.H. Savetha (Che) 3 bt G. Apurva (Kan) 2, J. Janani (Bloom) 2 bt M. Khushboo (Tvlr) 2.
