Veterinary doctor attends on snakes Snake charmers made aware of Wildlife Act HYDERABAD: Nine snakes including three Indian cobras, four rat snakes and two sand boas were rescued from snake charmers by volunteers of the ‘Sahayog’ , an animal and human welfare organisation, from Warangal on Tuesday. The snakes were seized from snake charmers in Torur cattle market, 50 km from Warangal by a team of ‘Sahayog’. “They were suffering from internal injuries and were not active when we took possession of them,” said Giridhar Gopal, an inspector of the organisation. He said a veterinary doctor attended to them on Wednesday at ‘Sahayog’ premises in Kacheguda where the snakes have been kept under observation. Mr. Gopal said that on receiving information that snake charmers would be coming to the Torur cattle market, a team from the organisation set out for the market. When the snake charmers turned up, the team took possession of the snakes after counselling the snake charmers. The latter relented to let go their livelihood only on being warned that they would be booked under Wildlife Protection Act which carries an imprisonment term of three years besides a huge fine. The organisation is in touch with authorities of the Forest Department and Nehru Zoological Park and will release the snakes to the custody of either , informed Mr. Gopal, who is also an Honorary Animal Welfare Officer. People may get in touch with the organisation on cell number: 98662-43719.
