Semmangudi’s birth centenary from July 20

BANGALORE: The birth centenary of the doyen of Carnatic music Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer will be celebrated along with the 40th music conference of the Bangalore Gayana Samaja commencing here from July 20.

Gayana Samaja president H. Kamalanath told presspersons here on Wednesday that Semmangudi, a well known musician, had over 75 years association with the Gayana Samaja.

“His contribution to classical music was great. July 25 marks his birth centenary and the Gayana Samaja will celebrate a two-week festival along with the music conference,” he added.

“Music homage to Semmangudi” will be offered from July 20 to 26 and a music conference would be held from July 27 to August 3.

Well-known musicians such as the Rudrapatna Brothers, Malladi Brothers, R.K. Srikantan and Sukanya Prabhakar would perform on the occasion.

Mr. Kamalanath said that expert sessions featuring technical subjects on music and the theme on “Semmangudi” would be held from July 28 to August 2 daily at 9.45 a.m.

Fourteen experts who had close association with Semmangudi would deliver lectures and demonstrations on his life, achievements, excellence of music and other related matters, Mr. Kamalanath said.

During the valedictory function on August 3, he said Bellary Venkateshachar would be conferred with the title “Sangeetha Kalaratna”, and 10 senior artists who have rendered service in various disciplines of fine arts would honoured as “Artiste of the year”, Mr. Kamalanath added.

Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami will inaugurate the conference on July 20 and scientist M.R. Srinivasan, will preside over the programme.
