Record placements for ship technology students

KOCHI: Students of the Department of Ship Technology at the Cochin University of Science and Technology have maintained their record in campus recruitment by netting 100 per cent placement this year.

Each student received an average of four job offers from the country and abroad. This includes 12 Navy candidates who were absorbed in the Naval Construction wing of the Indian Navy on completion of their course.

Students of the Department said that the average salary of the 29th batch of Naval architects who passed out last year was Rs. six lakh per annum in the country.

The average salary for a posting in a foreign country was Rs. 11 lakh a year.

The highest salary offered touched the Rs. 18 lakh mark. Oshima Shipyard in Japan came up with this offer.

Offshore Dynamics Ltd at Sharjah came close with a pay packet of Rs. 15 lakh a year.

Students said that the Department has a dynamic alumni working in world-class ship building and shipping firms like American Bureau of Shipping, Class Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, Oshima Shipyard, Japan, G. T. R. Campbell and Drydocks World Dubai and Singapore.

Fourteen third year students were sponsored for internship by multinational companies like Drydocks World Dubai, Specialists Services, Noble Denton, International Shipping Bureau, Schiffko GMBH Germany, and Abdudabi Ship Building.

The B. Tech course in Naval Architecture and Ship Building was accredited by Royal Institute of Naval Architects, London in 1994 for a period of five years.

The course is an eight semester programme with six to eight weeks of industrial training/internship at the end of every academic year except the final year.
