Tirupur: A large number of goods vehicle drivers went on a strike here on Wednesday following the call given by the CITU Motor Association demanding withdrawal of life tax levied on mini cargo vehicles.
The drivers also staged a protest in front of the Regional Transport Office. According to Y. Anbu, district general secretary of the union, the tax worked out to Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 19,000 per vehicle depending on the vehicle model. Nearly 5,000 mini cargo vehicles are operating in Tirupur.
He said the association had been protesting against the hike in petroleum prices, increase in motor vehicle insurance amount and amendments to the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rules.
