VIJAYAWADA: As a token of encouragement to 103 sportspersons, who clinched medals to Acharya Nagarjuna University, in various all-India university level competitions, the university authorities felicitated them at a function held on the campus on Wednesday. Vice-Chancellor Y. R. Haragopal Reddy gave away cash awards worth Rs. 3.69 lakhs amidst warm applause from the students and sports administrators. “TWe have also given away special awards to two handball players Venkatalakshmi and Madhavi, who represented India in the South Asian championship held at Kolkata. They won a gold medal for their team. They were given Rs. 10,000 each,” said Y. Kishore, university physical director. Keen on taking stock of the sports development, the university conducted a review meeting of the last year’s performance in which all the physical directors affiliated to the ANU took part. According to sources, the university was planning to establish a yoga centre and also stage a major international event. “IT giant Infosys is planning to sponsor an inter-collegiate football tournament in a big manner,” the sources said.
