MADURAI: The slogan, ‘catch them young,’ has caught the eye of Railway Protection Force too. The RPF Madurai Divisional Security Commissioner, M. Suresh, on Wednesday visited V.K.K. Playgroup Matriculation School here to impart passenger awareness.

So, how does the RPF expect its campaign among school children to work? “They are the future citizens. Anyway they are also rail travellers. And we expect them to carry on our message to their parents,” Mr. Suresh said.

The RPF has been conducting awareness campaigns in trains, on railway platforms and in some villages and it is now going to schools as it can take the message to a larger audience at a time. Its Assistant Commandant, T. Murugaraj, said that simple tips like not accepting eatables from strangers and securing their luggage were imparted to students.

“The railways have provided locking facility for suitcases and other luggage. But not many are aware of it. Had many used it without fail, suitcase lifting cases would have been prevented,” he said.

Drugging by strangers was an important issue the officials touched upon. They also dwelt at length on how not women should fall victims to chain snatchers.

“They sit on the window side exposing all their jewellery, making them very vulnerable. We asked the children to keep the window shutters closed if women were very particular in sitting on the window side,” he said.

“We hope they become more alert during rail journeys and even alert their parents,” Mr. Murugaraj added.

RPF Inspectors, K.S. Kannan, and M. Senthurapandiyan, guided the children to distribute pamphlets on these issues to passers by.
