TIRUCHI: To drive home the importance of eye donation, a ‘Journey for sight’ rally was organised on Wednesday. Nearly 450 participants included members of Lions Club of Tiruverambur, retired employees of BHEL and NSS volunteers from Urumu Dhanalakshmi College.

‘Journey for sight’ is the prime project of the club that seeks to sensitise people and encourage them to donate eyes.

The volunteers shouted slogans stressing the need to donate eyes and distributed pamphlets carrying messages on eye donation. The messages said eyes must be protected with wet sponge and removed within six hours after the death of the donor and removal of cornea would not disfigure the face. It listed the hospitals and institutions that register names for eye donations.

The rally, flagged off by District Chairperson of ‘Journey of Sight’ K. Ramaraju, began at the college. An awareness meeting for the students was conducted and speakers briefed on the growing patronage for eye donation across the world.

They also appealed to the students to create awareness among people in neighbouring areas.
