Agreement on employing sanitary workers in wards
Staff Reporter
MADURAI: An agreement on employing sanitary workers in the wards of Government Rajaji Hospital here was reached on Wednesday after the Madurai unit of the Tamil Nadu Government Nurses Association staged a demonstration demanding more sanitary staff under its control to ensure cleanliness in wards.
Led by P. Kannagi, secretary of the unit, the association urged the hospital administration to hand over power to control female sanitary workers.
Later in the day, the hospital authorities held talks with the matrons and agreed to provide the power to handle female sanitary workers.
“The administration has agreed to hand over all the workers to us. But we wanted only restoration of earlier practice, where only female sanitary workers were under our control. To which, the authorities have agreed,” said Ms. Kannagi.
S.M. Sivakumar, Dean (in-charge), when contacted, said that the new practice would come into effect from August 1 and the hospital administration would be vested with the posting powers while the matrons would have powers to control the sanitary staff on duty in wards. The daily roll call would be done by the matrons, he added.
