Homage paid to 94 schoolchildren

REMEMBERING A TRAGIC EVENT: The memorial for the schoolchildren, who died in the fire tragedy at a school in Kumbakonam in 2004.
KUMBAKONAM: Homage was paid to the 94 children, who died in the Kumbakonam school fire, on the fourth anniversary of the tragedy on Wednesday.
The parents of the children came to the school building and placed wreaths and offered flower petals to the children’s photographs. They also lighted candles.
Politicians, Kumbakonam Bar association office-bearers and members and people from all walks of life paid their homage.
The Students Federation of India organised a marathon race in memory of the children.
A memorial is being built for the children at Palakarai at Kumbakonam at a cost of Rs.30.5 lakh. The Kumbakonam government fine arts college has sculpted a statue depicting the event at a cost of Rs.29 lakh. It was brought to the memorial which includes a park, prayer hall and library.
In a memorandum submitted to the Revenue Divisional Officer of Kumbakonam, parents of the deceased children appealed to the government to expedite the case related to the tragedy and punish the guilty. In the evening, lamps were lit and set afloat in the Mahamaham tank.
