CHENNAI: The State Cabinet has decided to extend the distribution of special items through the public distribution system by another year.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had announced the introduction of thoor dal, urad dal, refined atta, palmoil, rava and maida in the PDS because of the runaway inflation. The measure was to bring some relief to the common man.

Having evaluated the working of the system and convinced of its advantages to the common man, the Cabinet decided to extend the special PDS by another year. A long discussion on the issue preceded the decision, a note issued at the end of the meeting said.

Phone tapping

The Cabinet was informed that Shanmugam Committee report on phone tapping along with the action taken report would be tabled in the Assembly. This was because the Chief Minister had made the announcement in the Assembly and stated that he would probe the matter and place a report in the House. The government would take appropriate action and table a report on it, too.

The Chief Minister will meet industrialists on Friday to discuss ways to tide over the power crisis. The Cabinet discussed the deficiency in rainfall and also came up with suggestions for handling the situation. It decided to waive the dues from Municipalities and Corporations on account of improvements/re-laying of roads and bridges from 1989. It also decided not to collect the share from urban local bodies in future.
