Joint Commissioner for Entrance Examinations S.N. Kumar has urged students to read newspapers to hone their debating skills. He was addressing students at MGM School, Akkulam, after inaugurating ‘The Hindu Newspaper in Education’ programme at the school on Wednesday. The occasion also saw the launch of a newspaper subscription scheme at the school. “Select a topic and spend at least 15 minutes on it debating,” Mr. Kumar told the students. He also advised them on the need to be in touch with contemporary issues through the newspaper. He said the popularity of television, radio and Internet would not diminish the influence wielded by newspapers on the readers. “The in-depth news reports which a newspaper can offer make it comprehensive and exhaustive.” The Hindu on its part has been providing “balanced news to the readers” allowing them to form their own opinion, instead of thrusting the paper’s views on the readers. “It gives news without sensationalising it, that is the advantage of this newspaper,” he said. V.J. John, Principal of the school, stressed on the significance of reading newspapers. Amal Mary George, assistant head girl and Class IX student of the school, proposed the vote of thanks. Students DayProving that they are equally adept at learning, teaching and in managing a school, the students of Christ Nagar English Higher Secondary School celebrated Students Day on Thursday. At the school assembly the ‘student principal’ Aneesh ‘took charge’ for the day by accepting the golden key from Principal Fr. Paul Mangad. Later, 60 ‘teachers’ fanned out to various classes and handled lessons. Student-teachers who put up a good performance were felicitated by Fr. Mangad at the valedictory function held in the evening. The school bursar Fr. Cyriac Kanayil was among those who participated in the programme. The Hindu-NIE Team
