MYSORE: Leading publishers are participating in a two-day book exhibition organised by the University Library, University of Mysore, under the 11th Plan of University Grants Commission (UGC), on Manasagangotri campus here.

This is first time in the recent years that the library has organised the book exhibition to purchase books required by over 40 departments of the university. The exhibition, which began on Thursday, has brought the chairmen and the faculty members of all the departments face-to-face with the publishers and get their choice of books for the benefit of students.

University Librarian M. Krishnamurthy told The Hindu that the UGC had released Rs. 10 lakh to the university to purchase books for the library based on the requirement of the departments.

“Funds are released once in five years to purchase books. Usually, we used to collect the requirement of books from the departments and place the order with the respective publishers. This time, instead of sending the list of books to the publishers, we invited them to the book exhibition to give better choice to the departments,” he said.

Over 20 publishers, including Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Springer Verlag, Higginbothams, Sapna Book House and Chetana Book House, have displayed their publications. More than 40,000 books are on display. “We may purchase about 1,000 books as per the requirement of the departments,” he said.

Acting vice-chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy inaugurated the exhibition.
