Mahila Congress plans pro-nuclear deal campaign

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: The All India Mahila Congress has directed all its State and territorial units to hold rallies in all the States on Saturday in support of the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal.

‘Nuclear deal - A deal empowering India,’ would be the main thrust of the proposed “vehicle rallies” called by the Mahila Congress, according to Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president A.V. Subramanian.

Mr. Subramanian told reporters here on Thursday that Mahila Congress president Prabha Thakur had sent circulars to all PCCs stating that the rally should be held simultaneously in all district, State and territorial headquarters from 11 am to 2 pm.

Ms. Thakur had said that the civilian nuclear deal was “in the interest of our people, farmers and the poor and also for the development and empowerment of the country” and it was for this reason that the chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh “were committed to the deal.”

“Opposing this deal by a few political parties will be against the nation’s interest and also against the interest of farmers,” she had said in the circular. Ms. Thakur had also urged the activists to carry pictures of Ms. Gandhi and Dr. Singh and banners and placards while participating in the rally, he added.

The Mahila Congress functionaries had been asked to appeal to the public through public address system to “have faith in Ms. Gandhi’s ideology that the civilian nuclear deal would bring prosperity.” They had also been advised to announce that the deal would bring more and affordable power, as promised by Ms. Gandhi and Dr.Singh.

A set of slogans to be raised during the rally had also been circulated by the Mahila Congress leadership.

Mr. Subramanian said the rally in Puducherry would start from Indira Gandhi statue and culminate at Venkatasubba Reddiar statue. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, his Cabinet colleagues and PPCC functionaries would extend their support to the rally, he added.

A rally in support of the civilian nuclear deal would be held in Karaikal during the same period, he said, adding that in the second phase, awareness campaign in the form of public meetings and street-corner meetings would be held in the towns and villages.

A total of five representatives had been deputed to the training camp for campaigners in New Delhi slated for Saturday to highlight the achievements of the UPA government, he said.
